Today, we want to both discuss the platform and ecosystem we built for time-series telemetry and its capabilities and announce the open-sourcing of its underlying foundation.
While working in the datacenter, telemetry was split between an IT-provisioned commercial product and a tool a Netflix engineer wrote that allowed engineers to send in arbitrary time-series data and then query that data. Sadly, even in the datacenter we found that we had significant problems scaling it to about two million distinct time series.
Inwe started building Atlas, our next-generation monitoring platform. In lateit started being phased into production, with production deployment completed in early In particular:. Many of these are capabilities that are provided by the RRDTool library Epic was using, but most alternatives we looked at fell short in these categories.
In addition, we have uses for other 3rd party services like CloudWatch and it is desirable to have common query capability for that data. As noted above, metrics volume was growing and we needed a system that could keep up. For a long time our biggest concern was write volume, however, we also wanted to scale in terms of the amount of data we could read or aggregate as part of a graph request.
This graph is substantially smoothed; during failover exercises when we send all North American traffic to one AWS region, we can easily see Atlas sustain greater than 1. Most time-series systems rely on metric identity which is, essentially, a string.
As users of the system want the metric name to be more meaningful, they make it longer, more complicated, and include more data. For example, one metric name we had in the old system is:.
All of Netflix.
This metric name encodes in itself some information:. This created two types of problems:. We wanted the ability to support many, many more dimensions, in a way that was predictable, easy to discovery for users, and possible to scale for us, the engineering team responsible for the care and feeding of this system. In order to get a common API, have flexibility for backend implementations, and provide merged views across backends we built a query layer that can be hierarchically composed.
The diagram below shows the main Netflix setup:. We have isolated regional deployments in each operational region as well as a global deployment that can combine the results from multiple regions.Cloud Atlas wants nothing for ambition. Which it does for almost three hours, in stories that span centuries, from the slave trade of the 19 th century to a post-apocalyptic culture centuries into the future.
They all seem to be on the same page here, charting both the best and worst in mankind through the ages and into the future. And Aegisthus enables the bulk abstraction of data out of Cassandra for downstream analytic processing. Netflix has open sourced many of our Gradle plugins under the name Nebula.
Nebula started off as a set of strong opinions to make Gradle simple to use for our developers. But we quickly learned that we could use the same assumptions on our open source projects and on other Gradle plugins to make them easy to build, test and deploy. By standardizing plugin development, we've lowered the barrier to generating them, allowing us to keep our build modular and composable.
We require additional tools to take these builds from the developers' desks to AWS. There are tens of thousands of instances running Netflix. Every one of these runs on top of an image created by our open source tool Aminator.

Atlas features in-memory data storage, allowing it to gather and report very large numbers of metrics, very quickly. Atlas captures operational intelligence. Whereas business intelligence is data gathered for analyzing trends over time, operational intelligence provides a picture of what is currently happening within a system. Atlas was built because the existing systems Netflix was using for operational intelligence were not able to cope with the increase in metrics we were seeing as we expanded our operations in the cloud.
Inwe were monitoring 2 million metrics related to our streaming systems. Bywe were at 1. Atlas is designed to handle this large quantity of data and can scale with the hardware we use to analyze and store it.
For details and background on the project please read through the Overview page. Check out the Getting Started page for an introduction to using Atlas in the cloud environment. In order to ease the strain, major streaming services are finding ways to reduce bandwidth. YouTube began five days ago by making all videos default to "standard definition" or p. The program started in Europe but is now being rolled out globally. You can still choose to watch high-resolution versions by going into the settings and manually changing them, but for many video types and mobile users, the difference might not even be noticeable.
Netflix is in a different position, having priced some of its subscriptions based on streaming qualities of UltraHD, HD and standard definition. But each of these resolutions have multiple streams, sometimes dozens, which use different compression settings to balance quality with network loads.
By shutting down the top quality, highest bandwidth streams for each resolution, the company says it's managed to reduce total Netflix traffic by 25 percent, while still delivering the resolutions people have paid for. But you will still get the video quality you paid for. So it's not using as much bandwidth as it would've in the pre-COVID world, but it's adding another hugely popular streaming service to the pile. Other major services like Amazon Prime, Facebook, Instagram and AppleTV have also made similar moves to reduce bandwidth usage by throttling streaming quality.
Considering the massive influx of videoconferencing that's flooded networks as huge numbers of people switch to working from home offices, measures like these are an important contribution to keeping everything moving as smoothly as possible. LOG IN.
